Indie Rock
Indie rock is an important part of Toronto's musical landscape. With a world-wide reputation, North by Northeast (NXNE) is an annual three-day festival in June that exposes emerging rock talent to fans and industry professionals. It began in 1996 and hosts hundreds of bands, mostly from Canada and the United States. Three-dozen music venues participate in this event and most are concentrated in the downtown core, along Queen St. West, College St. West, and the Bloor St. Annex.

As a legendary venue for rock music, the Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen St. W.) has been around for nearly 60 years and lends a stage to alternative rock, punk, pop, and country musicians. Indie music fans should also check out Lee's Palace, (529 Bloor St. W.) a mid-sized rock club that lends a stage to a wide selection of alternative bands. Lee's also has a Dance Cave upstairs with regular DJ nights. And as Toronto's answer to New York's CBGB, Cameron House (408 Queen St. W.) is an art-music-theater bar that offers fans the chance to see fresh, up-and-coming indie artists.
