Festival of South Asia

Festival of South Asia

For one weekend each August, Toronto's Gerrard Street East disappears amidst the bright costumes, cane dances, tandoori chicken, and Bollywood tunes. A celebration of Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, and other South Asian cultures, the Festival of South Asia is expected to attract close to 200,000 participants this year.

Food plays an important role in the festivities, and South Asian delicacies such as samosas, butter chicken, and pistachio desserts can be sampled from a wide array of street vendors and participating restaurants. Live traditional vocal and instrumental music, Bollywood-style performances, fashion shows, a sprawling bazaar, and kids' activities are among the festival's many highlights.
