For wet and wild fun, take a short trip just west of Toronto to Wild Water World, Canada's largest water park, which features gargantuan water slides, tidal wave pools, and fun for the whole family. For screaming-fast roller coasters and other amusement park excitement, head north to Canada's Wonderland theme park. And for a near-authentic safari adventure, head about an hour outside of the MegaCity to the African Lion Safari, a reserve dedicated to the preservation of lions and other African wildlife: You can drive your car through acres of preserve to view the majestic animals. More animals are to be seen at the 710-acre Toronto Zoo, located in Scarborough and boasting the continent's largest indoor gorilla exhibit.

Quieter recreation is also close at hand. Take a ferry from the south shore of Toronto to the Islands, an archipelago across from the city on Lake Ontario. Here you'll find Centre Island and its lovely parks, tranquil hiking trails, and relaxing beaches. Or stay on the mainland and bike along the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail, where you can bike as far as Mississauga to the west or to Scarborough to the east, and pass through downtown Toronto in between.
