Areas in Toronto

Toronto abounds in numerous ethnic communities as well as neighborhoods distinguished by a rich architectural and historical heritage, all of which lends itself especially to being seen on foot. So put on your walking shoes and explore all that the city has to offer in its different areas: Downtown East, Downtown West, West End, East Toronto, Midtown, the Entertainment District, the Greater Toronto Area (MegaCity), North Toronto, and The Beaches.

Head to Downtown East, the eastern section of Toronto's downtown core, for a charming walking tour of the largest collection of Victorian architecture in Cabbagetown. The Village, Toronto's gay and lesbian community, is also located here. Downtown West is home to Toronto's bustling Chinatown as well as colorful Kensington Market. The Financial District, where you can see both soaring skyscrapers and lavish turn-of-the-century buildings, features modern architectural wonders such as the CN Tower.

You'll find authentic Italian bakeries and charming outdoor cafes in Little Italy, located in Toronto's West End and just adjacent to Little Korea, where delicious Korean-style BBQ and karaoke await. A taste of Eastern Europe is also around the corner in Little Poland, where you can pop pierogis to your heart's content. And for more, distinctly varied cultural experiences, cross over to East Toronto, where you'll find Greektown and vibrant Little India within blocks of each other.

Midtown is home to the University of Toronto, Canada's largest educational institution. Take a walking tour of the historic campus and its lovely architecture, or explore one of the many museums nearby, including the expansive Royal Ontario Museum. More cultural experiences await in the Entertainment District, home to the Theatre Block, where you can see a homegrown play or hear world-class classical music--or just decide to club hop until dawn.

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA), also referred to as the MegaCity, offers a lot to see. You and the family can experience wild animals up close at the African Lion Safari, or ride the rollercoasters of Wonderland theme park.

While plenty of trendy shopping is to be found throughout Toronto, posh North Toronto, with its exclusive shopping malls, is the place to indulge in high-end browsing and buying. The Beaches neighborhood offers a place right in the city to get away from it all. You can saunter down the boardwalk and enjoy the charming beachy atmosphere.
